Talking about the advantages and disadvantages of different sports

In our last lesson, we briefly wrote down some of the advantages and disadvantages of different sports from listening 2

Now complete  exercises 1 & 2 on page 279 in your listening and speaking book and exercise 5 on page 276

Once you have completed the exercises 1,2,  & 5 use the information you have collected about the advantages and disadvantages of the different the sports to create your own presentation. The presentation should cover the following things:

  • What is the sport your talking about? Include a brief description of what it involves.
  • What are the advantages of doing that sport?
  • What are the disadvantages of doing that sport?

Remember that this is an independent presentation so you will be presenting it by yourself.

Group Speaking Task: 

Working in groups of three you are going to plan a sports competition encouraging people to use your local sports centre. When planning out your response you must cover the following steps

  1. Choose a popular sport or activity in your competition.
  2. Decide where the competition will be held and the equipment you’ll need.
  3. Think of reasons why people would/wouldn’t want to take part in the competition
  4. Decide together on a prize to give to the winner of the competition

Once you have planned everything out prepare a presentation and present your idea to the class. Make sure everyone in your group talks.

Critical Thinking (Unit 7)

In today’s lesson, we are going to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of different sports.

In groups discuss the following questions. Remember to take notes as you discuss

  1. What makes someone a good competitor?
  2. What makes someone a good referee?
  3. Do you think the best prize in a competition is always money?
  4. Is it important for children to do activities where they can win or lose? If so why? If not why not?
  5. What other types of competitions do we have in life?

Now that you have discussed the above questions share your ideas with the rest of the class.

Now that you have differentiated between the disadvantages and advantages complete exercise 3 pages 271 listening and speaking by adding all the advantages of urban golf on the rake diagram.

What are the disadvantages of playing urban golf add your ideas to the rake diagram in exercise 4 page 272?

Look at the four different sports mentioned in listening two, Choose one of the sports and think about the advantages and disadvantages of doing this sport. Brainstorm your ideas and write in the Padlet link below:

Practice Task: 

Answer the questions found in ex. 10 pg. 261 L/S  by yourself. Once you have done this share your responses with your friend. Remember to write down what your friend says (take notes using a note application on your iPad). After you have done this swap partner and repeat (remember to take notes). Share your friend’s responses with the class.

 

Listening 2 Unit 7

In today’s lesson, we are going to continue looking at different sports.

You are now going to listen to a sports science student giving a presentation about a project. Listen to the listening and complete exercises 5 to 7 pg 265. Once you have finished you will need to share your responses with your classmate and check.

Listening 1 Unit 7

Webquest:

Because the listening is about taekwondo work in groups and carry out a WebQuest about taekwondo. Create a presentation and then present it to the class your presentation should cover the following areas:

  • What is Taekwondo?
  • When did it start?
  • Do you have to wear special clothing or use special equipment?
  • Would you like to try this sport?

Bias:

Before listening you should think about who is talking and why. Sometimes people are “biased”: they will have a special reason to agree or disagree with something. For example, a jockey will say horse racing is the most interesting sport but a footballer will choose football. So if you think about the person, this can give you information about what they might think before they speak. You can then listen for words that help you understand their opinions.
