Introducing Comparing Maps

In today’s lesson we are going to introduce the idea of writing essay in order to compare two different maps.

Vocabulary: 

In order to write a good essay, it is important that you have some useful vocabulary. Click on the link below and review the vocabulary that can be used to describe change and position in a map

Vocabulary Based Task:

Using keynote chose ten words from the links above to create a presentation explaining the vocabulary that has been introduced. Make sure each slide in your presentation does the following

  1. The word being looked at
  2. A picture
  3. A definition of the word
  4. A sample sentence

Examining Maps 

Let’s have a look at the maps below:

In groups discuss the following questions:

  1. What has been added to the map?
  2. What has been removed from the map?
  3. What has been replaced on the map?
  4. What has been extended or increased?
  5. What is the biggest change that you can see on the map?

Once you have finished your essay swap essays with a friend and use the checklist below to review through your friend’s essay

  1. Does the essay have 3 paragraphs (introduction, body and conclusion) ?
  2. Does the essay tell you what the maps show ?
  3. Does the essay mention what the major change is?
  4. Does the essay talk about the major changes?
