Giving Instructions

In today’s lesson we are going to learn how to give instructions related to sports.

Before we start the lesson lets watch a short video about lifting weights. While you watch the video take notes using an application like note pad on the steps needed to dead weight properly:

Compare your notes with your partner and share your ideas with the class.

Giving Instructions (Essay Structure) 

When giving instructions use the following 3 paragraph essay:

Introduction: 

Should include 3 sentences

  1. A general sentence possibly describing the sport you will be describing
  2. A sentence talking about the picture and what it shows
  3. A thesis statement describing what you will be doing

Body:

Describe the different steps if what your describing. Remember to use sequence words such as: first, second, third & finally 

Conclusion: 

Make sure your conclusions starts with a concluding statement (for example to sum up, to conclude). Finish your conclusion with a general observation about the steps you have described. “To conclude we can see that to lift weights you need three basic steps”

Independent Writing Task 

In this independent writing task you will be writing a three paragraph essay describing how to throw a javelin, Watch the video below and take notes using an app of your choice

Using the diagrams below write a three paragraph essay describing how to throw a javelin using a writing app of your choice. Remember to use the structure that i have shared with you

Use an app of your choice to write your essay remember to email me a copy of your essay so that i can review through it with you (philip.elwell@aths.ac.ae)

Use the checklist below to review through your work:

  1. Do you have three paragraphs
  2. Does your introduction include the following things: a general statement; a sentence talking about what the pictures sho; a thesis statement
  3. In your second paragraph describe the different and remember to use sequence words
  4. In your conclusion make sure that you use a concluding phrase and a general statement about the picture

 

Reading 2 (Tough Guy Competition)

In today’s lesson we will reading an article about the Tough Man Race. 

Pre -Reading Task 

Using the internet work in groups and research the following questions about the Tough Man Competition:

  1. What is the tough man race?
  2. Where does it take place ?
  3. What do you have to do?
  4. Is It free or do you have to pay to take part?
  5. How many obstacles are there usually?
  6. Give an example of one of the obstacles that are usually found in the race?

While Reading: 

We will now read a short article about the  Tough Man Race after reading the article answer the questions. The reading can be found in e-book pg. 263-266 exercises 4-7 (Reading & Writing)

Post Reading

During the reading we learnt that in order for you take part in the Tough Man Race it is important that your healthy and fit in this final part of the lesson you will work in pairs to create a short presentation using an application of your choice to  talk about : Why people keep fit?

Your presentation should cover the following questions

  1. Is it important to keep fit ?
  2. What can people do to keep fit?
  3. What are some of the positive benefits of keeping fit?
  4. What do you do to keep fit? Would you recommend these activities?

Before presenting remember to check your grammar and spelling?

Adverbs (Already/Just/Yet)

In today’s lesson we are going to look at adverbs in general and focus on the adverbs already/ just/yetz

Now that you understand how to use adverbs and the words just/already and yet please complete the following exercises from your text book : Listening and Speaking pgs. 259-260 ex. 7,8 & 9

Listening 1 Unit 7

Today we will be listening to a panel discussion about taekwando. Before we listen to the discussion lets watch a short video about the history of Taekwando

While watching the video use a note taking such as note pad to answer the following questions

  1. Where was taekwando originally founded?
  2. When was it founded?
  3. How many people are now training and fighting in TaeKwando?
  4. In what century did royal families hold Task Kyeon Tournaments?
  5. Who would participate ?

Listening 1: 

Listen to the discussion and respond to the listening comprehension questions. The worksheet can be downloaded from the link:Listening 1 (Unit 7)

Post-Listening Exercise 

During the listening we heard about how technology is being used in the sport of Taekwando. In this activity we are going to carry out some research to see how technology is being used.

Using (www.thinglink.com) create a interactive picture toking at how technology is being used in that sport. Your interactive picture must answer the following questions:

  1. How and in what way is used technology being used>
  2. Has it improved the sport?
  3. What are the advantages of of using this technology?

When creating your interactive picture make sure that you are as creative as possible and you can include text, videos and pictures.

The sports you can look at are as follows:

  • American Football
  • Swimming
  • Tennis
  • Cycling

Present Perfect Tense Review

Today we will be reviewing through the present perfect tense

Introducing Comparing Maps

In today’s lesson we are going to introduce the idea of writing essay in order to compare two different maps.

Comparing 2 maps (Review)

In this lesson we are going to review through the idea of comparing 2 maps.

Warm up:

Pre-Writing: 

Have a look at the two maps below what can you say and what are the differences

Using the paddle link below work in pairs and quickly brainstorm as many ideas as you can:

After you have completed your essay swap essays with a  peer and use the following check list

  1. Does the essay have 3 paragraphs (introduction, body and conclusion) ?
  2. Does the essay tell you what the maps show ?
  3. Does the essay mention what the major change is?
  4. Does the essay talk about the major changes?

Reading 1

In this lesson we will be reviewing through an article about strange sports  and we will also be making posters using our own knowledge to talk about different strange sports

Pre-Reading 

Lets watch this video about 4 weird sports:

While watching the sports remember to answer the following questions

  1. What is the name of the sport?
  2. What do you have to do?
  3. Why is it weird?

Remember to write your answers in your notepad app.

Lets discuss your responses

While Reading 

Independently read through the article “5 Strange Sports” and respond to the reading comprehension questions exercises 2-6 pgs. 256-259 in your reading and writing book. Once you have completed the exercises remember to compare your answers with your friends.

Post Reading 

Now that you have watched a video and read an article about different strange sports it is now your turn to work in groups to create a short presentation/poster/brochure using an app of your choice to talk about  four different strange sports. Remember to include pictures, videos and some writing explain what the sport is. For each sport you must answer the following questions

  1. What is the sport?
  2. Where do they play this sport?
  3. How do they play this sport
  4. Why do you think it is weird
  5. Would you like to play this sport?
